Winter Race Training 2009/10 PDF Print E-mail

2009/10 saw the first ever winter race training at ELYC, 10 keen cadets took to the water over 6 weekends braving some of the worst weather winter could throw at them! 18172_238810860591_156255895591_3361830_4241496_n_edited

The aim of the winter training was to give the group the best run up to the 2010 season with the hope that they would carry on through the season taking part in club racing and some major regattas. Kenneth, Lindsay and Alex  (with a guest appearance from Lucy) ran the 6 weekends with the weather gods giving them summer conditions one week and arctic the next! With the race training happening every second weekend there was some real chances for the cadets to put in some good results during the winter series, with Ewan Rycroft having some storming races and posting a good overall result. With some very good results coming in from pro team feva (Callum Findlayson and Andrew Stewart) if only they had used the same sail every week they might have beaten Ewan!

With some lessons learned from the coaching and winter series, the group were in high spirits in the run up to Strathclyde Loch Xmas Regatta. Unfortunately it had to be cancelled because the Loch had become a giant ice cube! So the group decided to go and see Avatar instead which turned out to be a much needed rest!

Meeting back up on the first weekend in February numbers were down with the school ski trip taking one member of the group out and snowboarding another the traditional winter sports were looking like the winners but the intrepid 8 left braved the waves and light winds for a day of drifting in the bay! The last weekend though turned out to be a great one with good winds and sunny weather. The group took part in some fun events on the Sunday including team races, rudderless sailing, and some blindfolded races! Sophie and Sarah obviously communicate a lot better than the boys as they won both races!

We would like to say a big thanks to all that took part in the winter training and that we are very proud of your improvements, and that we all look forward to seeing you leading races in the coming season.

Lindsay, Kenneth, Alex, (and Lucy)
