ELYC’s training team says goodbye to one of its talented young Assistant Instructors PDF Print E-mail
Calum Finlayson

Calum Finlayson said good bye to his friends and fellow instructors last week as he left Scotland for a new life in America. Calum who learnt to sail at ELYC a few years ago at the summer school, became an Assistant Instructor last year. Since then he has shown great enthusiasm towards instructing at all training sessions and has proved his worth on more than one occasion!

As well as being an awesome instructor, Calum also raced regularly in club toppers, or his favourite RS Feva ‘Olvors’ with crew Andrew Stewart. Recently Calum came first in the topper fleet at ELYC’s Cadet Regatta.

Calum will be missed around the club by all who knew him, and we wish him all the best with his new life in the USA.

Assistant Instructor Course PDF Print E-mail

Another group of Assistant Instructors qualified at the weekend.  The whole group progressed well throughout the course despite the weather on Saturday

The course equipped the candidates to help deliver sailing courses at East Lothian Yacht Club, including making presentations, delivery instruction, and working on their own personal sailing skills.

Saturday proved challenging with a stiff breeze, and although the team managed to get sailing in the morning the rest of the day and evening concentrated on delivery of the shore based syllabus.

Sunday provided perfect sailing conditions, and practical sailing instruction was looked at including, working on the 5 essentials, man overboard and capsize recovery.

Congratulations to all the new Assistant Instructors and we look forward to seeing you both out on the water, and also helping out around the club.

4 Club Members Achieve Senior Instructor Status PDF Print E-mail

At the largest Senior Instructor course to take place this year finished on Monday with great success for the 4 participants from ELYC - Lucy Robertson, Mathew Gibbons, Ben Wilcox and Mike Willis all passed what turned out to be a challenging and fun course with fantastic weather.

The four day course, held at Port Edgar was run with four Coach Assessors and provided a great forum for sharing and developing ideas and methods. The candidates became highly proficient in running sessions with little to no wind, however at long last on the Sunday afternoon the breeze came in which was a relief for both the candidates and the coaches.
