Support Ellen as she bids to row the Atlantic

ELYC member Ellen Clark is rowing the Atlantic! She writes:

"In December 2026 I will be part of a team - Saltire Tides - rowing unsupported across the Atlantic as part of the World's Toughest Row 2026. Over 40 days at sea, we will row 3,000 miles from La Gomera to Antigua, facing 40ft waves, sleep deprivation, unpredictable weather, and salt sores.

We are an all-female trio who met living together in Dundee. Myself and Lauren are physiotherapists and Jenna is a paediatric surgical trainee. We have bonded over a shared love of adventure and being on the water, as well as a strong belief in human potential. This row is an amazing challenge that none of us could resist. We hope that our journey will inspire others to push their own boundaries and say yes to the opportunities life has to offer, no matter how big or small.

We will be raising money for The Archie Foundation, a charity supporting children and their families across Scotland through life's toughest challenges. They provide many services, from bereavement support and counselling to funding essential new equipment across NHS sites. We have witnessed first-hand the benefits they provide to families when navigating their healthcare journeys.

Our training is now underway and we are seeking sponsors to help make the crossing possible. There are Title, Gold, Silver and Bronze opportunities available for larger companies, as well as sponsoring an oar, or joining the £250 Club (a great option for smaller businesses, groups or individuals who would like to have their name on the boat!). We also have a GoFundMe for individual donations.

We are grateful for any bit of support, no matter how big or small!

Follow our journey on Facebook (Saltire Tides) and Instagram (@saltiretides).

We Need You!

We are a members club run by the members for the members which means all of us should be doing something to help run the club and look after our infrastructure.

Recently — after many years of service — committee members have stepped down from their roles and more will do so at the AGM. New people have joined and are doing an excellent job.

We have not found members to take on all the work done by those who stepped down, some of the committee have taken on two or more “jobs” and are now doing too much.

The pool of people with some experience of running the club is diminishing, more members need to be involved otherwise there will not be enough experienced members to run the club in the future and our activities will be reduced.

We need more members to participate in running the club. You would not be taking on sole responsibility for any activity or need to become a committee member just helping where needed.

We need help with:

Maintenance of our buildings

Organising revenue generating sailing events

Maintenance of club RIBs – no RIBs means no sailing!

Helping young adult members maintain club boats

Managing the use of the club dinghy park spaces

Organising sailing sessions for adult and cadet improvers

Administration of mooring and tender storage applications

Keeping our operating procedures and guidance notes up to date

Ensuring our safeguarding procedures are compliant with the legislation

Managing our Instagram, Facebook and Messenger accounts

Supporting fundraising activities to contribute to the cost of replacing our roof

Initiating plans for events in our club’s centenary year in 2028

There is a real risk that without more help from the membership sailing sessions will be lost, our buildings and RIBs will deteriorate and revenue generating regattas will not be run.

Please think hard about this - we need active members to maintain the success of the club which has been achieved through all the efforts of earlier generations. Being more involved is rewarding, social and fun if there are enough of us doing it! Don’t leave it to someone else volunteer yourself!

Please send me an email if you can help with any of the activities listed above. I will record names and sort them into groups and contact you again.

Thankyou Stewart Gibbons secretary@elyc.org.uk

Remembering Betty Millar

The Club is saddened to learn of the passing of long standing member, Betty Millar.

A keen sailor in her younger years, Betty began her sailing career crewing for younger brother, Jim Strudwick, in his graduate. Although to secure the coveted crewing spot aboard Jim's boat, she had to buy her way in by agreeing to purchase the sails for the boat, which Jim had built from a kit.

After two or three seasons Betty then crewed for husband and former ELYC Commodore, David. They sailed a variety of boats together including Thames Estuary One Designs (TEOD) and Skuas until they eventually purchased a Hunter Europa named Topsy. The Hunter Europa was partly aimed at introducing Betty's son Bruce to sailing.

Betty was also heavily involved in running Championships and club racing, known for running races (OOD) singlehanded.

Sail on, Betty.

Autumn Updates

As the nights draw in we've a few club updates to share:

Winter Series

Winter dinghy racing gets underway for the 2022/23 season on Saturday 5th November with the first of the Winter Series. All winter dinghy racing events are listed on the club calendar and duties are available for volunteers to sign up on DutyMan.

Mike Rigg has very kindly offered to OOD the Winter Series - this is a great opportunity for AOOD's to learn from a very experienced race officer. We really want to develop and encourage more confident OODs for next season, so do take the opportunity now to learn the ropes (and lights and hooters!).

Everyone planning to race over the winter should take (at least one) turn volunteering for safety cover. Please sign up using DutyMan.

Please note that racing over the winter starts at 1300hrs. Those on duty should aim to be at the clubhouse by 1130hrs except the Assistant OOD, who would need to be at the clubhouse by 1230hrs.

Save the date — Prizegiving 2022

A date for your diary - the annual prizegiving will take place in the Club bar on Saturday, 26th November after racing. We do hope you are able to attend and join with other members to celebrate a good year of Club racing and other activities. It is rumoured there will be pies.

RS200 Training Weekend

RS200 sailors are in for a treat on the weekend of Nov 26/27 when we'll play host to a training/racing weekend coached by National champion Amy Seabright. This will be a great warm-up for sailors and volunteers alike as we prepare to host the RS200 National Championships in 2023. Full details and entry: https://www.rs200sailing.org/championships/index.asp?pg=Home&eid=2396

Remembering Ken MacLean

Remembering Ken MacLean

By Gerry Hughes

Ex Commodore Ken, sadly passed away on Skye in October.

Ken moved to North Berwick around 1980 and joined East Lothian Yacht Club where he was a very active member, holding various committee positions, becoming Commodore in 2001/2002.

When he joined the Club there was a very strong Skua fleet which had been growing since the 1960’s. Eager to participate Ken, who was a very talented Engineer, built Skua number 51 named “Tystie” and sailed her with much success throughout the Forth from 1984 to 1994, often crewed by his good friend, Malcolm Baker.

After life with his Skua, Ken purchased a Hunter Formula One named Sheer Magic, then moved onto a Trapper 240 named “Tiger Ragg” which he sailed until 2006. Both boats competed regularly at club level and also took part in many an epic Bell Rock Race and various other east coast events.

Ken, who was an Outer Hebrides man in mannerism and habits, retired to Skye on the death of his wife, Wilma. There he enjoyed his small holding and turned his skills to renovating tractors and other farm machinery.

If you were ever on the island Ken was always keen to meet for a chat about ELYC tales and the current state of activities within the club, especially over a couple of beers in a Portree bar.

A good man.

Remembering Pam Swanston

The Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former member, Pam Swanston.

Pam, a former Occupational Therapist in East Lothian, was introduced to the Club by a colleague, Chris Wallace, who was a Radiographer at Roodlands.

It was in joining the Club that she met husband, Ian, who was Commodore of the Club between 1985 and 1987.

Pam sailed GP14s in her early sailing career and even had a hand in building her own boat.

Pam and Ian also owned a Sadler 25 named Corsair, a well known and fondly remembered keelboat which they would regularly take on lengthy voyages.

Remembering Alastair Anderson

ALASTAIR ANDERSON

1949 - 2021

MATTROID MAN AND DOUBLE WORLD CHAMPION

Words by Bill Roberts

Past-member Alastair Anderson died last week after a short illness in Perth, Australia where he and his wife Maureen had moved a few years ago.

I have a lot to <strike>blame</strike> thank Alastair for. Having played badminton with Alastair and Maureen for many years, in 1981, Alastair restarted Grace’s interest in sailing when he asked her to crew in his recently acquired Skua. Alastair had joined ELYC a season or so earlier sailing a Fireball. Sailing with his friend Tony, the Fireball had been rescued almost as often as it was launched, and Alastair was keen to find a more stable boat which could still provide some excitement – the legendary “Skua Wind”.

A couple seasons later, Alastair introduced me to sailing when I took Grace’s berth after she went off on maternity leave. With Alastair’s guidance I learnt how to recover a broken mast in a force 5 wind; sail a regatta race with a broken gooseneck; and most impressively, cross the start line last but finish first without overtaking any other boats (this relies on the rest of the fleet starting on the 1min gun!). With better crew onboard (Richard Jones and then his son Graeme), Alastair went on to win the Skua World Championship in ’88 and again in ’95 – the only person to win the Silver Skua in a full fibreglass (very much overweight) boat.

Alastair and his family took a full part in club life with Carrie and Graeme learning to sail – and Maureen taking a turn serving the Saturday afternoon teas – different times!. Alastair served as auditor and as Rescue Officer in the days when the blue launch was manhandled into the store under the Club for its winter maintenance and make-over. Alastair saw this as payback for the number of times the blue launch had rescued him in the Fireball.

Alastair’s interest in bigger boats was fostered crewing for friends on local yachts and led to his title “Mattroid Man” (half man / half mattress) for his ability to sleep through the night-time rigours of a Bell Rock Race. He chartered yachts in Yugoslavia and Greece for family holidays and he kept a Hunter Club 19 in the harbour and later a Jeanneau Fantasia 27 in Largs – bigger boat sailing was much more to Maureen’s liking than the dinghy.

And so, it was once again Alastair who introduced me to bigger boat sailing when our two families chartered a yacht in Corfu and set off for Navagio (Shipwreck Bay) on Zante – it was the only destination he asked to be included in the trip and we made it despite the onboard charts stopping a little short of the bay. The boat was a wreck (before we got it) and when the main halyard came off the sheave at the top of the mast. Alastair stepped forward without hesitation and offered to work the winch.

Another of Alastair’s unique achievements with the Skua was to tow it from North Berwick to Portugal as he and Maureen gradually moved away from North Berwick toward Australia via a spell in Lagos. In Lagos, Alastair sailed the Skua; added surfing to his list of sporting interests; and crewed with our own Brian Cameron (sadly late of this parish https://elyc.org.uk/page-1862259/10538604 )

For those of you who knew him, I hope my reflections help stimulate your own happy memories of his gentle, big smile.

Thanks, Big Al.

Remembering Sheila Smith

The Club are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Commodore, Sheila Smith.

Sheila served as Club Commodore from 2012-2014 and was a very keen Laser sailor. When she became unable to sail herself, she very generously donated her Laser to the Club in 2020, to allow promising and dedicated young racers a pathway into our sport.

She also donated a considerable amount of sailing gear in 2021, which greatly helped a number of Club members.

Our thoughts are with Sheila's family and friends.

Remembering John Wightman

Commodore John Watt Wightman CVO, CBE, RD* (RNR)

John Watt Wightman was born in Leith, his parents having moved there from North Berwick. His Grandfather (also John Wightman) was the local Ironmonger, session clerk of Blackadder Church and a founder member on the committee of North Berwick Yacht Club in 1901. Grandfather John competed in the fortnightly races in his yacht "Paragon". Robert Wightman, John Watt Wightman's father, was an early member of East Lothian Yacht Club in the 1930s initially with a lugsail boat called "Lothian Lass", and then having "Paragon II" built by Millers of St Monans in 1935. Just how he got building a new boat past his wife when he also had 2 year old John in the house (and golfed regularly) is slightly lost in the mists of time. Although growing up in Edinburgh, young John spent much time at North Berwick in the flat above the ironmongers shop, doing all the harbour things that those growing up in North Berwick do, including sailing model yachts built by his grandfather, playing on the beach and going out with local fishermen on their boats.

When the war came, the Wightman boats did not have wartime registration, so were stored ashore for the duration of hostilities. Paragon II was kept in one of the bays of Fowler's Garage on the High Street. Although the East Lothian coast was a closed area, young John was still able to come down to stay above the shop by working as a boy on one of the farms at Rhodes holdings. He was in the town when bombs were dropped on the Law, and also when a mine detonated on the East Beach breaking windows along the front. He continued to be friends with patient local fishermen and learned the names of all the rocks, and "meads" (transits) for passages through rocks. Knowledge, which is now lost to most.

In 1945 Paragon was launched again, and young John was given one of the ex hire rowing boats, with wartime registration "A6" to use. He credited use of that rowing boat as giving him the understanding of how to manoeuvre twin screw ships in later life. He had a great interest in flora and fauna of the coast, in particular the sea birds. He continued to sail with generations of the Auld family as well as his own family. He continued to sail Paragon II, increasingly taking responsibility for maintenance from his father during the 1950s.

He joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve Tay Division in 1951 (while at University) and undertook his National Service in the Med with the RN, seeing action both in Cyprus (which he discussed with Andreas with some circumspection) and landing tanks at Suez. After National Service he joined Forth Division RNVR, bringing mine sweepers and MFVs down to North Berwick from time to time. Although he did nor race sailing boats much at North Berwick, he did tell a story of racing round the Bass Rock in naval whalers (27 foot long open boats with a dipping lug rig, and five oars). The start and finish line was at Rosyth Docks. He did race in Paragon II occasionally, mostly in the Elie Stern Chase, with some success, although given how poorly Paragon points compared to Bermudian yachts, in years with too much south in the wind Paragon II would come last by quite a long way.

He did also take advantage of sail training in ELYC, when he was required to have a dinghy sailing qualification to take part in a 1980s Royal Naval Reserve sailing regatta. Thank you to Morty Turner, ELYCs instructor at the time, for getting him through his RYA "Elementary" at a time when he was already qualified to command ships. His family did enjoy watching the capsize drill in a Mirror dinghy. It will be hard to imagine for current members under the age of 50, but no wet suits were used at that time. The capsize was conducted in cotton shorts, a woollen jumper and a Helly Hansen buoyancy aid.

John continued to sail Paragon II into his 80s, still staying in the flat above the Ironmongers shop. Although not a racer, he did make full use of his boat, and sailed her into most of the harbours in the Forth. Sail of course, because she does not have an engine. The furthest south he took the boat was Alnmouth in Northumberland (in one hop from North Berwick). The furthest North he sailed Paragon II was Arbroath. On one memorable occasion he sailed in one day from North Berwick, to Inchcolm, over to Aberdour for lunch, and then back to North Berwick...... taking advantage of the tides and a 180 degree wind shift at lunchtime. He enjoyed many adventures in the boat, and it is sad that we can no longer hear them from him, nor share in his knowledge of the history of the harbour and the natural history of the coast.

In his civilian life "JW" was an Edinburgh lawyer with law firm Morton Fraser. His legal practice was wide and diverse including a large rural practice in the North of Scotland, and some commercial clients including the paint company that supplied the paint with which Paragon (and the Forth Bridge) were painted. He was awarded the CBE in the 1980s in recognition of his military career. He was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in the 1990s in recognition of his services as solicitor in Scotland to Her Majesty the Queen.

by Mike Rigg – Vice Commodore

Brian had been a member of ELYC since 1978 and over those years he has sailed and raced a vast number of dinghies and yachts, successfully, and he never lost that love for sailing and racing right up until his recent death.

I personally met Brian when I first joined ELYC in 1990, at that time he was sailing a Fantasy which very shortly afterwards he sold and bought what he always described as “LOVE IT TO BITS” a First Class 8 he named Lambada. Brian competed here at ELYC, the various East Coast Weeks held on the Forth, Tay and the North East and the Scottish Series held on the West Coast.

Many a yacht club member were involved in all these events including delivery trips to and from the venues. In 1999 John Hookway and I purchased a First Class 8 which led to friendly rivalry between both boats and our friendship with Brian strengthened each helping each other with launching etc.

In July 1997 Brian and Vivienne married and much to the “delight” of Viv she spent her honeymoon in a caravan and tent shared by Brian and his crew as they raced at East Coast week on the Tay.

Eventually in the early noughties Brian sold Lambada and bought Nimrod or as he lovely called it Nimmers. He raced Nimmers as regularly as he could and irrespective of where he finished he always came ashore with a broad smile again saying “loved it to bits”.

During this period he felt the need for the close racing and excitement of dinghy racing and purchased a Laser 2000 which he christened Line Dancer. He raced Line Dancer most Wednesdays and Saturdays ably crewed by Mike Smith and at times Ainsley McLaren. The sight of Brian and Mike approaching the start line with seconds to go brought fear to the hearts of many a dinghy sailor, as the boat lived up to its name. The sight of Brian bearing down on me on Starboard with Smithy puffing away on his e cigarette will live with me forever.

Vivienne has kindly donated Line Dancer to the club, to be raced by members, in memory of Brian so she will still be seen battling out on the water.

Brian spent some of his time away from North Berwick when he and Viv would go to their apartment in Lagos, Portugal. During one of his trips to Lagos he purchased a 47ft catamaran called Sticky Paws which he used to race and potter around the bays and harbours of the Algarve.

Brian always had a yearn to sail long distance and in 2004 he decided to satisfy that by entering the RAC cruise from Lanzarote to Antigua. He was crewed by ELYC members John Hookway, Martin Craig, Paul Rigg and myself. The trip took just under 3 weeks without a harsh word being spoken. Brian would spent all day preparing the various evening meals including one day a fish pie using the only fish we ever caught followed by a sweet of custard and apple pie. Having not taken custard power on board he made the custard from first principles. The only strong drink consumed was water and a bottle of Fizz to celebrate my wife Maggies 60th birthday and our radio chat with Gerry who was only 24 miles away doing his own transatlantic crossing. Needless to say our arrival in Antigua was a cause for celebration with many Dark and Stormies being drunk.

Brian kept Sticky Paws in the Caribbean for a couple of years and he and Vivienne spent two winters cruising the beautiful islands of the Caribbean.

In 2006 it was time to bring her home back to Portugal and he joined ARC Europe along with others. Brian had made up his mind that he would do the return leg without the use of an engine, which he only used for entering and leaving harbour. I was once again asked to be part of the crew which I jumped at. I found some of the many windless days and nights hard going and would go to my bunk, when not on watch, and listen to music. As we approached Bermuda Brian spotted another boat in our fleet and of course this led to a windless race to the finish line, which was at least a day away. However a gesture so typical of Brian was when he shouted down to me to come up as the finish line was in sight and then told me to take her over the finish line. A gesture I’ve never forgotten. Brian was awarded a special prize by the organisers of ARC Europe as being the only boat to sail back without the use of an engine.

Brian's love of racing led him to purchase a 34ft Carbon Fibre racing yacht called Yellow Bird which he had totally restored to its original condition. He successfully raced Yellow Bird in all of the local regattas, some many miles away from Lagos , and local races. This led to some uncomfortable nights trying to sleep as Yellow Bird was not equipped as a luxury yacht but as an out and out racing machine .The discomfort was soon forgotten the next day as we were bearing down on the start line with shouts of "up, up!" from Brian.

Latterly he was using Yellow Bird less and less so in another move typical of him he donated Yellow Bird to the local sailing club for the youth of the club and town to learn the art of sailing and racing.

Brian was a big man in many way, but I’ll always remember him as having a big heart who never fell out with folk and always thought the best of people. The funny stories around Brian will hopefully be told for many a year around the club bar and it will be a long time before we see his ilk again.

Rest in Peace Brian its been a privilege to be called your pal.

Mike

Fraser Takes the Helm!

The Committee recently announced that former Commodore Sheila Smith had kindly donated her Laser to the Club for the exclusive use of a Cadet/Junior member for a full sailing season. A fantastic gesture from Shelia and a tremendous opportunity for a young Club sailor to get involved in the Laser scene at ELYC.

The committee subsequently invited Cadet and Junior members to submit their applications for use of the Sheila's Laser and as such, we are delighted to announce that Fraser Davidson will be taking the helm for the 2021 season.

Fraser is absolutely delighted and thanks the Club and Sheila for making it happen. He intends to sail and race it as often as he can, plus he’s promised to give it some good old TLC.

We look forward to seeing Fraser and Sheila's Laser on the start line soon!

Autumn can bring some of the most memorable conditions and beautiful sailing around North Berwick. There is still plenty of time to enjoy the water this year.

With the resumption of outdoor contact sports, we can remove many of the restrictions on our club activities. Naturally easing restrictions are associated with accepting higher risk. While the Scottish and Lothians infection rate remains low, we all know local spikes and clusters are still possible. The club will take reasonable precautions but risk cannot be eliminated. Members should take individual responsibility for deciding whether to attend club events.

Phase 3 - Outdoor contact sports update to members

Outdoor club organised sports events of up to 30 people are permitted provided contact tracing is in place.

Registration is still required for all club events to enable contact tracing.

The maximum number of boats in a club event is increased to 20.

We will no longer launch and recover dinghies in flights.

The wind limits are at the discretion of the OOD.

The 2 season minimum sailing experience is removed. Club sailing events now require an RYA2 cert or equivalent.

Mixed household dinghy crew and rib crew are permitted. ELYC strongly encourage a single crew buddy that you keep for the year.

We continue to allow single handed RIBs for RYA or ELYC safety boat certified helms; PB2 certification alone is not enough to single hand a club rescue boat in our waters.

Rescue crew will only intervene if sailors require an ambulance, first aid or separated from their boat.

Club boats may be hired for all club events.

The bar is open! Thanks to Pete, Ruth and Alastair for putting all the work in to open up the club bar. We have limited the capacity, spaced out the tables and ensured plenty of ventilation, the intent is to be a relaxed place to meet up.

We are looking at how and when we open the cafe. We have a little more work to do here. If you would like to help define or influence our future catering, please step forward with your ideas.

Sailing Update

Social sailing continues to be popular, we have increased the number of boats that may register and plan to run events through the balance of the year.

Yacht skippers are running ad hoc cruises whenever the tides and forecast suits.

Racing has been blown off more than on recently, but we expect the covid guidance has stabilised for a few months so Matt has created the Autumn series on the club calendar.

Squad activities are about to get started with structured coaching for cadets who want to advance their racing skills.

A club closed regatta will be run end of September, with first weekend of October as reserve. Thanks to Steve Fraser for being chief regatta wave maker.

Our instructors pulled together 2 weeks of training just in time for the end of the school holidays.

Our maintenance crew are hard at work keeping all the wheels greased and the club boats water tight. Take a moment to say thank you in person whenever you see Donald, Ted, Ricky, Mike, Angus. And if you break something, please remember to email bosun@elyc.org.uk and let them know.

Club Duties

With the latest update allowing mixed household Ribs, our pool of rib drivers may increase, but many members are not comfortable breaking social distance. If you are signing up for club events, plan on taking a club duty around once a month. And if you have not done a duty yet, right now is the best time to sign up on dutyman.

At the start of lock down in March we allowed members to defer their subscription as we figured everyone would have more important tasks to attend to. As the club approaches the end of our financial year, now is the time to chase outstanding subscriptions. We'll send out a reminder shortly and ask everyone to pay their dues by Wednesday 30th September. We'll assume you wish membership to lapse if we don't hear from members before that date. Of course, if you need more time or a little help, and wish to continue membership, please just let Ron (Treasurer), Alison (Membership) or Nick (Commodore) know.

Fireworks 2020 cancelled

We have decided to cancel the fireworks display this year. East Lothian Council guidance is to avoid large outdoor community gatherings http://orlo.uk/N0A6W, and we could be left with fireworks that we could not use and the associated costs. We'll put the funds aside for a display in 2021.

The club flag will fly at half mast on Thursday 16th July in memory of Douglas Barbour.

Douglas was a rescue boat man in the days before our fast RIBS. Maintaining the club boats and using his own boat for duties gave him a huge amount of pleasure.

Mike Rigg remembers Douglas as always ready to give advice and a helping hand if you had any problems.

Ted Hill's memories of Douglas are when he succeeded Bill Morrison to run and maintain the blue diesel rescue boat. (It was a Cheverton Champ with Lister dump truck engine. Royal Forth had one also, but ours had a whip staff steering arrangement to maximise working space astern of the helm's position). Douglas was always noted for his infectious laughter and very loud voice. He put in a lot of work for the club and his practical skills were legendary.

The Barbour family have always been good friends to the club. On behalf of East Lothian Yacht Club let me send my thanks to Douglas and the wider Barbour family for all the help and support contributed to the club over many years. We have had Barbour rescue crew, regatta team, racers, cadets, instructors and more.

East Lothian Yacht club extend deepest condolences to the Barbour family.

ELYC Covid Response Plan

Phase 1 relaxes rules on watersports from 29th May. The ELYC covid team have reviewed government guidelines and RYA guidance and created our club policy as we enter Phase 1.

Phase 1 can be summarised as:

Club sailing is a group exercise and not allowed or appropriate in Phase 1.

Individual sailing is allowed and appropriate. You may only sail on your own or with members of your household as crew.

Sailing in a buddy system is recommended for safety while maintaining distance.

The club will provide guidance to experienced sailors on how to sail as individuals safely and with respect.

The granary and sunlounge may be used to access personal equipment.

The club house will remain closed.

Project KRAKEN aims to raise awareness among partners and maritime communities' of the process to report suspect and suspicious behavior within the maritime environment.
North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership

The following was received by the Club via the North Berwick Harbour Trust and is being provided as courtesy information for our members.

Plans unveiled to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility on North Berwick High Street

North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership today announced that a series of measures will be tested to enhance pedestrian safety, accessibility and improve parking in and around the east end of North Berwick High Street. The proposals, agreed by the North Berwick Charrette implementation group, include the widening of pavements by applying a low level kerb, the introduction of 30 minute short stay parking on the High Street, the re-designation of long stay spaces in Law road car park to short stay 90 minute no return, and the creation of additional parking spaces for public use on Quality Street. The measures are expected to result in greater turnover of parking spaces in the town centre. This enhanced parking provision is expected to significantly increase the availability of short stay parking spaces. It follows North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership bringing together a working group which included representatives from the North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership’s ‘On the Move’ group, local traders, North Berwick Community Council, cycleforth, members of the community and East Lothian Council. This group has been meeting over the last 18 months to help implement the recommendations arising from the successful 2017 North Berwick Town Centre Charrette consultation. The proposals have also been informed by an event held last May, when more than 600 people attended to give their views about plans to improve the east end of the High Street. It is now expected that East Lothian Council will prepare a draft Experimental Traffic Regulation Order for consultation, which would pave the way for the proposals to be introduced on a trial basis for up to 12 months, during which time the council will monitor the effectiveness of the measures. It is hoped the Order could be implemented from Spring 2020. Hilary Smith, Chair of the North Berwick Area Partnership, said: "We are committed to making North Berwick town centre more accessible, safer and a more pleasant place to be for everyone. The North Berwick Town Centre Charrette, held in 2017, provided us with a roadmap to address some of the issues faced by our busy High Street. “While the High Street is a fantastic place to live, work or visit, its narrowness at points can be challenging for some pedestrians, particularly with close proximity to vehicles.

“After nearly 18 months of deliberation, the North Berwick Charrette implementation group has agreed that it would be appropriate to test the effectiveness of a number of measures aimed at enhancing the east end of the High Street for the benefit of all users. In doing so, we want to enhance the local environment and help support the economy. “These improvements are being led by local people who have worked together to put things in place. The charrette showed what the community wants from its town centre - our goal is to provide it. “With the agreement of East Lothian Council, we intend to test the acceptability of these interventions for up to a year. “Before putting these into place, we’re inviting everyone with an interest – including local businesses, residents and all users of the town centre – to attend an upcoming drop-in event, where there will be an opportunity to see the plans for themselves.” Event details Date: Thursday, 27 February Time: 4pm to 7pm Location: North Berwick Community Centre (small hall), Law Road, North Berwick EH39 4PN Robin McEwan, a member of the implementation group and cycle forth, said: “cycleforth welcomes the announcement of experimental changes for traffic at the east end of the High Street. cycleforth has been campaigning for some years for a pedestrian priority scheme here but accepted the NB Charrette’s conclusions for pavement widening and removal of traffic as a moving in the right direction. “The scheme now announced is a further compromise but cycleforth expects that users of the High Street will still welcome the changes as bringing significant improvements, providing a safer and more pleasant environment. We are confident the experiment will be a success and lead to further changes to improve the traffic environment in the High Street and further afield.” Christiane Maher, a member of North Berwick Community Council and the implementation group, said: "I am hoping the solution we found will make the High Street a much nicer place for pedestrians, while not unduly disadvantaging those who depend on getting to the High Street by car." Kirsty Towler, another member of the implementation group, added:

“I think that the views of everyone matter - that’s why the charrette was important. It looked at getting a community conversation going. The changes take account of all sectors of the community and the focus is on safety and wellbeing for all. We need to be a considerate community - considerate of all of the diverse range of needs of visitors and residents (whether new or old) and of business and the local economy. “I think a great deal has been achieved in getting a compromise. I wish it had not taken so long. But it is a milestone, a significant achievement, and one which is hoped will make life safer and more pleasant for all groups in the eastern section of the High Street.” More info on North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership:

Welcoming New Additions!

At our AGM earlier this year, I announced one of our short-term development aims for 2019/2020 was to fundraise for new single-handed dinghies.

Our Committee gave approval to fundraise for four boats and a sub-group was formed for this aim. The sub-group approached a number of local trusts and sailing trusts and applied for grants.

A number of cadets and adult members tested a variety of dinghies at Port Edgar and their preferred choice of boat was the RS Zest.

I am delighted to say now that we have been successful. North Berwick Trust provided a 100% grant to purchase four RS Zests including four launching trolleys, four jib packs and four mast socks. In addition the North Berwick Rotary Club have also provided us with funds to purchase equipment to help support the operation of these boats.

We are also fortunate in that we were able to buy the boats from stock and take delivery without any further delay. As a result the 4 Zests are now with us! The plan is build them up and get them ready for their first test sail with our young instructor team on Friday 28th July. Look out for further news on this in the next few days!

The Zests will soon be joining our current fleet of club boats and will be available for hire for all our sailing activities and sail training courses.

This is great news for our club. We can continue to build on previous years successes, encouraging and developing our members, cadets, young adults and adults so they can progress from "can sail" to "can race", and improve the sailing opportunities we can offer to our members. I am hopeful we will also welcome a new class of boat to Saturday and Wednesday racing, the RS Zest!

I would also like to say a huge thank you to all the members, both on and off the Committee that have helped with all the work involved on this initiative.

Others may remember him as a regular around the harbour and Sail Loft Cafe, always seen in his trademark checked sports jacket.

Any old Photos?

As we know, East Lothian Yacht Club is 90 years young this year. We have been busy behind the scenes trying to gather as many old photos as we can, so that we can share them at the upcoming Birthday Bash in November. And also keep them for prosperity on our website!

It would be great if members young and old could have a search through their albums and share any old photos they may have of yacht club memories!

If you happen to find any, please let us know by emailing webmaster at elyc dot org dot uk. Even better, you could scan them and email them to us at the same email address.
